We’re looking for enthusiastic and reliable volunteers to help steward a series of exciting events happening at Abney Park Cemetery this spring and summer. Volunteering roles include welcoming guests, signing attendees in and out, supporting event leaders, and being on hand to help with any incidents. Ever wondered who was first buried in Abney Park?

On the grey Tuesday morning of 2 June 1840, Rev’d James Mather (b. 1775) was the first person to be laid to rest in Abney Park Cemetery. James Mather was a Congregationalist Minister at the Upper Clapton Chapel. The second burial, on 7 June 1840, was that of 16 year old Susannah, who lived at 6 Stoke Newington High St.

Abney Unearthed project update

The volunteer-based Abney Unearthed project has now run for just over two years.

The project initially began in 2017 with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (now NLHF) and Hackney Council. The initial project ended in 2019 and was deemed successful by the HLF after delivering all outputs and providing engaging tours, informative displays, also producing the first version of the online map and adding information to the new database. The online map can now be seen here.

Weather warning closes Abney Park Sat 2nd Nov, History tour cancelled Sun 3rd Nov

Abney Park is now open. The gates will close at 4.30pm.

Due to the high wind warnings forecast by the Met office, the Trust has been advised that Abney Park will be closed this Saturday 2nd Nov.  This closure will also mean that the History Tour scheduled for 2pm on Sunday 3rd Nov is cancelled. Abney Park will re-open once the tree officers have carried out their safety checks - this may not be until Monday morning.

Abney Park Visitors' Centre - Opening Times

The Visitors Centre is now closed on Mondays, and also the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. We are open from 10am until 4pm from Tuesday to Friday, 12pm - 4pm on Saturdays, and 12pm - 4pm on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. When applicable we are also open from 12pm - 4pm on the 5th Sunday of the month.
Drop in for maps of the park, or to peruse our cards, books, posters, t-shirts and other mementos. You can also chat to our friendly staff for further information, and to answer any questions you may have.

Donate for our London Marathon Runners

Abney Park Trust are delighted to have runners in the London Marathon on April 28th to fundraise for our memorial restoration projects. We would like to thank Jim Grice and William Deamer who have both generously agreed to run for Abney Park. The restoration projects were voted for by visitors at our last Fayre and include cleaning the large Celtic cross at Abney House corner, or repairing the broken sarcophagus near the Church St entrance.
