Join Abney Unearthed for this brand new tour based on research into the 200,000+ people buried in the cemetery. Hear the stories of those who lost their lives at sea who are either buried at Abney Park, or commemorated on a family grave. The subjects of this tour include seafarers lost on various oceans, families lost in shipping and ferry disasters, ship’s surgeons and a naval captain posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

William Hone Memorial Lecture: Comedy and Caricature in Georgian England

Join us for our Memorial Lecture on the life and work of William Hone. Hone was an early nineteenth century satirist who famously faced a three-day show trial in 1817. It was so dramatic that Ian Hislop wrote a play about it. But Georgian satire was so robust that it can put even Private Eye in the shade.

The Maiden Tribute

Catherine Booth campaigned against the exploitation of women and child trafficking. When she and a journalist showed it was possible to purchase a 13 year old girl, the Government's response was to imprison those who exposed this. Abney holds people who planned and were sentenced for their part in this scandal of the 1880s. Adult themes will be discussed.
